homecoming parade
A Night of Hawkeye Spirit

I wanted to do an Iowa painting in honor of my oldest daughter’s graduation from high school, and to celebrate my becoming a ‘University of Iowa Mom.’ Homecoming, with all the festivities, is one of the best things about Iowa’s beautiful fall season. Nothing compares to the crisp fall air, the UI Marching and Alumni Bands, floats and fun, the crowds, fireworks, and maybe a full moon too. With the excitement of Iowa football at Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City is electrified at Homecoming!
In this painting: Iowa Book and Supply, The Airliner, Red’s World, Hand’s Jewelry, Iowa State Bank, Austin Burke Clothiers, Enzler’s, Girl Scouts, Bud Louis in his antique fire engine, Herky the Hawk bearing the Tiger Hawk flag, cheerleaders, poms, drum major, dogs, children and their families, a Cambus sign, Iowa City West High fans, City High fans. Hayden Fry is “stuffed in effigy”, with straw, on the cheerleaders’ float. This year the big City vs. West game falls on Homecoming Parade night!

“Homecoming Parade” “A Night of Hawkeye Spirit”, original painting by Iowa City artist Suzanne B. Aunan was chosen to be part of the exhibit: “Modern Primitives; Simple Art in a Complex Age”. The exhibit was at the Cahoon Museum in Cape Cod, MA April 29-June 21, 2003, with an opening reception, 5-7 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2003. The Cahoon Museum of American Art is named in honor of the late contemporary primitive painter, Ralph Cahoon (1910-1982), and is housed in his former home and studio, a 1775 Georgian colonial building. The Museum’s permanent collection ranges from folk art portraits by William Matthew Prior to marine paintings by James E. Buttersworth. Several special exhibitions are scheduled annually to complement the permanent collection. But the heart of the collection, and a continuing focus of the exhibition year, are the paintings of Ralph and Martha Cahoon. The Museum Store has reproductions of their work which are available for purchase.
