The Last Ride In

An October Night at Wilsons’ Apple Orchard

Every year, our family visits Wilsons’ Apple Orchard, in the beautiful rural hills just north of Iowa City, to “Take a Walk, Eat an Apple,” as Joyce and Chug Wilson encourage all their visitors to do. If you visit here, you will likely be greeted by Hawkeye the dog with licks and kisses, something about which my seven-year old is never thrilled. You will enjoy sampling any of the one hundred seventy varieties of apples they grow, as you hike the hills. One night, we were running late, but since Grandma was visiting from Florida, we wanted to be sure she experienced Wilsons’ Orchard with us before her flight home the next morning. After walking, picking and eating our fill, we got on “The Last Ride In” with Chug, and the awesome beauty of the orchard and pumpkin patch on that most beautiful, clear, full harvest moon October night was impressed on all our memories. As I rode the tractor ride, I knew I had to do this painting, and three years later, here it is!

The Cahoon Museum of American Art Chose “The Last Ride In” As Part of Their “Apple Exhibit”

“The Last Ride In” an October night at Wilson’s Apple Orchard original painting by Iowa City artist Suzanne B. Aunan was chosen to be part of the exhibit: “The Apple of My Eye (artists of the past) and The Tempting Fruit (contemporary artists). The exhibit is at the Cahoon Museum in Cape Cod, MA and will be September 18-November 10, 2001 with an opening reception, 5-7 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2001. The Cahoon Museum of American Art is named in honor of the late contemporary primitive painter, Ralph Cahoon (1910-1982), and is housed in his former home and studio, a 1775 Georgian colonial building. The Museum’s permanent collection ranges from folk art portraits by William Matthew Prior to marine paintings by James E. Buttersworth. Several special exhibitions are scheduled annually to complement the permanent collection. But the heart of the collection, and a continuing focus of the exhibition year, are the paintings of Ralph and Martha Cahoon. The Museum Store has reproductions of their work which are available for purchase.
